TerraVista
15.09.2009
I have done some overhauling of the website, making it actually much simpler...

06.04.2007
Version 0.4.5 is out. There is one new feature which is an automatic version check. If enabled TerraVista will check for a new version when started (although at most every 24 hours).
Then there is a bugfix for Mac OS X 10.3.9 as well as some minor invisible changes in the code.
The new version is available in the download section.
By the way, if you encounter a bug let me know. See the contact page for more details.

Version 0.4.4 is out. This is just a minor release, all that has changed is that the Japanese localisation is now complete (meaning that the high-resolution renderer is now also available in the Japanese localisation). Many thanks to Christopher Li.
The new version is available in the download section.

Version 0.4.3 is out. New in this version is the possibility to resize the earth to up to 800 pixels (instead of 400). This version also includes a high-resolution renderer to improve the detail quality at 800x800 pixels.
NOTE: Because of incomplete localisation the high-resolution renderer is only available in the English and the German localisation. For Japanese and Italian the high-resolution can be manually enabled by entering the following command in the terminal:

defaults write ch.ione.TerraVista highResRenderer 1

The new version is available in the download section.

Version 0.4.2 is out. There are some performance improvements (on my computer calculating the texture is now 4 times faster), new localisations (Italian, German) and some bugfixes. Check it out in the download section.

We're back! Well, at least the trac. Turned out it was some incompatibility between mod_python3 and some other module (though I could not say exactly which one).
Concerning TerraVista, I am currently kicking some ideas around, but at the moment I do not have too much time on my hands. We will see.

14.08.2006
Because of some problems with mod_python (which at the moment segfaults on every access) the trac is currently offline. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks to Christopher Li there is a now a Japanese translation of TerraVista. You can get it on the download page.

28.07.2006
Finally! I just uploaded version 0.4 of TerraVista (formerly called EarthView). This version adds two exciting new features:
  • Real-time clouds: An image containing the current cloud cover is downloaded from the internet. The image is updated every 3 hours and it is downloaded from here.
  • Seasonal textures: Each month has its own base texture. So you can actually see that in july there is less snow in the northern hemisphere than in december. (Note: Seasonal textures are only used if real-time clouds are activated)
You can get the newest version from the download page.

I put the new version of the website under the new domain online. Version 0.4 is still not quite finished (only packaging is left), but I hope to do that in the next few days.
The new site also contains a Trac for the development of TerraVista. You can find it here or by clicking on "Development" in the navigation bar.

22.07.2006
EarthView is now called TerraVista. As it turns out there is an application similar to EarthView and also called EarthView but with a trademark on the name.
After much deliberation (well, some deliberation) I decided to change the name to TerraVista.
A new version should be coming soon. Almost everything is finished, only packaging and distribution is left. As soon as I find the time to do that you should have a new version at your hands with exciting new features, so stay tuned ;-).

08.05.2006
EarthView 0.3 is here. It includes a number of new features:
  • High-resolution textures for a sharper image.
  • Optional hardware acceleration on supported graphic cards.
  • The floating window is now resizable from 100 x 100 pixel up to 400 x 400 pixel.

30.04.2006
EarthView 0.2.2 is out. It is just a bugfix release:
  • Bugfix: There was an error in the algorithm calculating the position of the sun which caused the terminator to be off by about 2 hours.
  • Bugfix: The right ascension in the view location window was not displayed correctly (it was always 0h 0min).
